Air conditioners rarely fail at a convenient time. They fail in July, in the middle of a heat wave, when the house is uninhabitable and the decision cannot wait for the next budget cycle. For most Tucson households a full system replacement is one of the larger unplanned expenses they will face, and how you pay for it deserves a clearer explanation than it usually gets.
Why financing exists for HVAC at all
Replacing a system is not like replacing a refrigerator. The equipment is only part of the cost; the labor, the electrical work, the duct connections and the permit all add up. Financing lets you replace a failed system with the right equipment, sized and installed properly, rather than the cheapest thing that will get the house cool this week. Over the fifteen-plus years a good system lasts, the difference in efficiency and reliability is real money.
Pre-qualification versus applying
This is the part that matters most for your credit. There are two different steps, and they are not the same.
Pre-qualifying is a soft inquiry. A lender looks at a limited view of your credit to tell you what you are likely to be offered: the amount, the rate range and the term. A soft inquiry does not appear to other lenders and does not affect your score. You can pre-qualify, look at the numbers, and walk away with no consequences.
Applying is a hard inquiry. It happens only after you have chosen an offer and decided to move forward. A hard inquiry is recorded on your credit report and can lower your score by a few points for a short time.
The order matters. Any financing that asks for a full application before showing you real terms is asking you to pay a small credit cost just to see the price. You should be able to see your options first.
How we handle it
We partner with Acorn Finance, a platform that lets you pre-qualify with multiple lenders at once. You enter some basic information, and within a minute or two you see the offers you qualify for from several lenders side by side. Checking those offers is a soft inquiry with no impact to your credit score. If one of them works for you, you choose it and complete the application at that point; if none do, you close the page and nothing has happened to your credit.
You can check your financing options here before we have even been to your house. Knowing your monthly number in advance makes the replacement conversation a lot less stressful.
What to look at in an offer
- The APR, which is the interest rate plus any fees, expressed as one yearly number. This is the figure to compare between offers.
- The term. A longer term means a lower monthly payment and more total interest. Match it to how long you expect to own the home.
- Prepayment. Confirm you can pay the loan off early without a penalty. Many people do once the emergency has passed.
- Deferred-interest promotions. "No interest for 12 months" offers charge all the deferred interest at once if the balance is not paid in full by the deadline. They can be a good deal if you are certain you will pay it off in time, and an expensive one if you are not.
- Fees. Origination fees come out of the loan amount up front. They are part of the APR, but it helps to see them stated plainly.
Financing does not change the estimate
The price we quote for a replacement is the same whether you pay by check, card or financing. We do not build a financing markup into the estimate, and we will not steer you toward a particular offer. Our job is to size and install the right system; the lender's job is to lend. Keeping those separate is how you know the estimate is honest.
Start with the estimate
If your system is on its last legs, the first step is a free replacement estimate. We will look at the house and the ductwork, recommend a system that actually fits, and give you a written price. Then you can check your financing offers on your own time, with no effect on your credit, and decide from there.
